Accordion Day @ The Anza Club is Tomorrow!

Hey Everyone!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Accordions and their fans are doing an excellent job of taking over Vancouver. Here is your itinerary for Sunday, September 16th, hereby declared  ACCORDION DAY @ THE ANZA CLUB
10: 00 am – 1:30 pm : Roll out of bed and nurse yourself back to full vigor, congratulating yourself wildly for having caught Geoff Berner and Panstereoama at the Waldorf on Saturday Night. You deserve brunch!

2:00 pm : Bring your cranky squeezebox and your curiosity to the Accordion Repair Workshop, led by San Francisco’s Renee de la Prade (of Accordion Babes fame) and Meladona. It’s PWYC, and will be hands-on, entertaining, and highly useful for anyone who chooses an accordion as their companion instrument.

4:00 pm: Saunter back to the Anza Club for  “Mistakes I’ve Lived Through”, a show dedicated to the incomparable thrill of first-times. Featuring a brand new accordion rock odyssey by Proud Animal, with backing from a deadly accordion mob; brand new pieces by accordion slinging youth; and an open mic open to anyone who wants to try their hand at public accordion performance. This show promises to be hilarious, a little scary, and sweetly memorable. Tickets $5-$7 at the door.

6: 00 pm : Time for a dinner break, friends! Did you know that Main St. has many delicious things to eat? Yup! And beverages– there are delicious beverages to be had. And vintage stores to pick through. Fun!

8: 15 pm: Doors open for the Underdog Instrument Grudge Match. The city’s finest and funniest ukuleles, accordions and banjos go head to head in  a musical brawl. Possibly the festival’s most “hands-on” event: come support your favourite instrument, or, if you hate them all, come and have your  mind blown by the hilarious cheating and brilliant playing of Vancouver’s top heavies. This show sold-out last year on word of mouth alone. Come early to avoid sadness. For a taste of the smack talk that’s already brewing, check out the FB event page.

9:00 pm – Midnight: We’re grudging hard. Did I mention this is the last event of the festival? No big deal, but if you want to have a drink with some of the sterling personalities behind the Accordion Noir Festival, you must join us. After the show at Locus on Main St. It is a place of cheap pitchers and nice beer. Good news for all! Talk to me at the show  (recognizable as the person saying, “I’m Barbara Adler”) if you’d like more info.

Happy Accordion Day Eve, and see you tomorrow!

Barbara Adler

Shout-out to Kerry from Co-op Radio’s West-Coast Classics for the spell-check.  His dedication to quality in media is an inspiration.  No, really.

Accordion Noir bus-shelter photo contest! (Win a shirt!)

There are lovely Accordion Noir Festival posters up around town on bus shelters with help from a  grant from the City of Vancouver. (Thanks Vancouver!)

Picture of Bruce with an antique accordion in front of one of the Accordion Noir Festival bus shelter posters.

The Challenge: If you share a photo of yourself, with an accordion, in front of one of the bus shelter posters, you will receive a free Accordion Noir T-Shirt.  How cool is that?  There are ten bus-shelters in various locations, collect them all!

The above example was taken late at night with a crap phone-camera.  See how easy it is?  You can do better than that!  Grab your accordion and start hunting!  Post yourself and your accordion on the Accordion Noir Festival Facebook page, or bring your photo to one of the shows and talk to us in person.

Here’s what the fine shirts look like:

ACCORDION NOIR FEST PROMO VIDEO

Check it out! Our 10 second promo video goes into rotation on the video billboard at Robson and Granville on August 27th.

Don’t adjust your sound, cuz there is none. The video billboard is visual only…you have to come to the festival to get the sound 8 )

That’s Jack Garton of Maria in the Shower energetically (imagine the sounds) charging the crowds from the video billboards to bring their giant-screen selves to the Accordion Noir Festival.

Help Write an Accordion Rock Odyssey!

Barbara Adler and Proud Animal need your help to write a song!

“Mistakes I’ve Lived Through,” September 16th at the Accordion Noir Festival will feature a brand new piece written in collaboration with YOU.

“But How?”

Like so. We’ve all made mistakes. I want you to send me stories and one-liners about YOUR mistakes. The ones you’ve survived. Funny, scary, noble. Anything! The Proud Animal writing team (Barbara Adler and Gavin Youngash) will be using them to write a piece for the youth show at the 2012 Accordion Noir Fest. Our rock odyssey will be performed with backing from a youth accordion choir. Mistake? I don’t think so.

E-mail us at: proud(at)proudanimal(dot)com

Thank you always, good suggesters, and see you at the festival! Barbara
