9TH ANNUAL ACCORDION NOIR FESTIVAL PRESENTS NOIR POTION #9

Noir Potion #9, the love tonic that cures accordion haters, will be available for a limited run at the upcoming festival, Sept 8-11, 2016. It can be applied as a perfume or imbided as a drink and promises to not only rid you of any residual doubts about your relationship to the squeezbox but futher promises to transport you into a squeezenotic love trance of intensely pleasurable proportions. We can't give away all of our secrets just yet, but here is a sample of one of the spicy ingredients in this year's mix.

Pinata Protest 2San Antonio based Piñata Protest is hailed by NPR ALT Latino as “brilliant” and “mind blowing”, and by the LA Times as “festively energetic”. This bilingual band brings shredding lead accordion to a mix of old school punk rock and traditional Latin border music which they have christened mojano punk.

More announcements soon.

WE ARE GOING TO BREMEN TO BE MUSICIANS

Bremen CoverA limited number of Geoff Berner's new album CD's are being shipped from Oriente Records, Berlin just for Geoff's album-release show on Sept 12th. The album isn't available in stores or online yet, so come and get one of the first copies and hear it played live at the Wise Hall.

“We Are Going To Bremen To Be Musicians” is a reference to the old German folk tale about elderly farm animals threatened with death, who run away from their masters in the hope of achieving freedom and becoming Town Musicians. It’s an absurd tale of irrational hope and optimism in the face of horror, and that’s where the story connects with the songs on the album. “I would describe the record as a compendium of strategies against despair,” says Berner.

Some of the strategies offered include: Love, as in the song “I Don’t Feel So Mad At God When I See You In Your Summer Dress”; Redemption, as described in “Swing A Chicken 3 Times Over Your Head”, and pure Shadenfreude, as depicted in “Dance And Celebrate (The Misfortunes of People We Hate)”.

Online tickets are already selling briskly. If you plan on buying tickets at the door (8pm) you should come early because this show will sell out.

VANCITY SPONSORS ACCORDION YOUTH

Hats off to Vancity! For three years Vancity Credit vancity-logoUnion has helped Accordion Noir fund community activities at the festival. This year Vancity donated $250 to help us fund our Youth Incentives. Thanks to generous funding from Vancity and BC Arts Council we are able to focus our community programming around sponsoring and mentoring a handful of youth performers for an afternoon all ages showcase on Sept 13th at Spartacus books.  The event "Diver's Bell Lounge" will also offer free workshops, cameo festival artist performances and a repair booth by Melodona. Also, we will be raffling off this rather lovely little 12 Bass Castle accordion as part of the afternoon's Castle Accordionactivities. It would be a great instrument for a beginning or young player, or it could also be very useful to a more advanced player who wants something super light on which to play mostly right hand lines. In addition to having awesome sparkly blue flat/sharp keys and buttons this little instrument has a surprisingly big sound and a sumptuous tone. It could be yours for just a few bucks...just come on down to Spartacus, 3378 Findlay Street, on Sept 13th, 2-6pm.

FLYING ACCORDIONISTS

Kate and Rich ColourWe'd like to give up a HUGE thank-you to the Noir supporters who donated to our Points Pooling Campaign. The points gathered have already helped to pay for the flight costs for four of our guest artists.  Angelica Negron, the composer from New York, Wendy McNeill, the folk noir chanteuse who currently lives in Spain but whose festival show is the last date of her Canadian tour with her new album, and last but definitely not least our two bicycle-touring musicians Kate Romain (sister of busy local drummer Kevin) and Rich Driedger, of the Kate and Rich Duo, from Halifax.

Check out the video that Wendy's Spanish dogs made about her upcoming tour (they speak surprisingly good English).

SVETKA AND THE RAVEN

10936568_840374506020812_2132272419_oThe Octopus is tied up  in knots with excitement that Svetka and the Raven will be performing on the same night as Wendy McNeill at the festival this year. As soon as the Octopus can untangle itself we will be releasing the schedule, very soon. But in the meantime here is some artist info to fill your boots.

Svetka and the Raven is an illustrious combination of sound and sight intertwined by accordionist/vocalist Julie Gennai and shadow projectionist Charlie Walker. With whimsical sights, tales and melodies, these two artists find a haunting medium between the auditory and the visual. Julie is a multi-faceted artist living in Victoria, BC. She has toured internationally as a accordionist, harpist, and vocalist, working with musical groups such as Blackberry Wood, Compassion Gorilla, and The Wayover Yonders. Julie has also worked with circus-theater company Bread and Puppet as both a puppeteer and member of the circus band.

RATTLETRAP RUCKUS CABARET

Rattletrap Smaller File Rattletrap Ruckus is a rollicking four-piece instrumental band from Bellingham, WA. They play fiddle tunes, ragtime, tango, paso dobles, various breeds of waltz, klezmer, norteño, polkas, and specialize in providing soundtracks for strange and wonderful cabaret shows. This year the long and curly arms of the Accordion Noir Octopus reach out across the US border and drag this band of American rebels onto our stage to partner with notorious local dancers, clowns and puppeteers. This exotic  mixing of music and art will be anchored, at the heart of it all, by the rag-taggety, brilliant, and irresistable squeezings of Lucas Hicks.

GOING TO BREMEN WITH GEOFF BERNER AT NOIRFEST 2015

We_are_Going_to_Bremen_TinCanForest_1000x800It is an epic understatement to say that Geoff Berner has a few things up his sleeve this year.  His new work, "We are Going to Bremen to be Musicians", is an album and a book. The book portion, illustrated by Tin Can Forest, is a Berner-style retelling of a classic folk tale. It is being launched at the Pilot Bar in Toronto on May 7th. This venue is of course sadly out of reach for Vancouver fans.

However, the hot sting of not being present at that fine event will no doubt be completely ameliorated when we are all gathered in the Wise Hall for the album launch on Saturday Sept 12th at the 8th Annual Accordion Noir Festival. Watch for tickets online in early June.
